This Flamenco Technique Changed My Fingerstyle Playing

Alzapua is a powerful three-stroke thumb technique from flamenco music, and I’ve grown to love using it in my own fingerstyle arrangements—even on steel strings.
While flamenco techniques like rasgueado or picado can really tear up your nails on steel-string guitars, I’ve found Azapua surprisingly manageable and expressive.
In this lesson, I show you how I used Azapua in my original song Come Forth (from my new album The Word), and walk you through the basic mechanics: pluck, downstroke, upstroke—with optional percussive hits for extra groove.
Whether you’re a flamenco fan or just looking to add rhythmic flair to your fingerstyle playing, this is a great tool to explore.
