About the event

Through African-American spirituals and scripture songs, join Neil Chan on a journey into the lived experiences of the enslaved — stories of deep suffering, unshakable hope, and the faith that carried generations forward. These songs invite us to listen, empathise, and respond with compassion.

Though the event draws heavily on Christian texts and themes, you do not have to be a Christian to attend or enjoy it. Neil will be sharing to honour the history and experiences embedded in these songs — both the spirituals passed down by enslaved communities, and scriptures presented in their original form.

Admission is free with a $50 refundable deposit. At the end of the concert, you are welcome to reclaim your deposit or donate it to support a good cause (more will be shared at the event itself).

Come listen deeply, reflect freely, and be part of an afternoon that honours the past, engages the present, and hopes for a better future.

Neil Chan is a Singaporean fingerstyle guitarist, singer and ethnomusicologist who blends traditional music cultures with modern techniques. An advocate of love and respect regardless of race or religion, Neil's music invites everyone to experience a beautiful diversity of cultures and the shared humanity behind them.
